Teeth Whitening Q&A:

Q. Is teeth whitening safe?
A.
Yes. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth is safe. In fact, many dentists consider teeth whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. However, there are a select few who teeth whitening is not recommended. (See "Who should NOT undergo teeth whitening?")

Q. How does the whitening gel work?
A.
The hydrogen peroxide gel is a water-based product with an extra oxygen molecule (H2O2). The extra oxygen molecule helps to gently penetrate through the dentin and enamel removing the discoloured proteins.
A. The non-peroxide gel contains a botanical blend of Aloe, Pomegranate and Chamomile, which gently soothes your gums and freshens your mouth, while the power of Sodium Bicarbonate safely and effectively whitens and brightens your teeth.

Q. When is the best time to whiten my teeth?
A. The best time to whiten your teeth is just before bed and after your nightly dental routine. That way you don’t have to worry about staining foods.

Q. How long and frequently should I whitening my teeth?
A. We recommend whitening your teeth once per day for 15-30 minutes until desired level of whitening is attained. As an average, best results are achieved after 3-10 cumulative sessions of wear-time. More gel will not increase the whitening process; instead, repeating the whitening process for consecutive days will achieve optimal results faster! Just remember “less is more”.

Q. How do I store the whitening gel?
A. Keep your whitening gel is a cool dry place, out of sunlight. It can also be refrigerated for long term storage. Shelf life is 1 year un-refrigerated and 2 years refrigerated. These are general recommendations and may vary between manufacturers. DO NOT freeze the whitening gel.

Q. How white will my teeth get?
A.
The end result varies from person to person. A teeth whitening treatment will not make everyone's teeth snow white, it will however make them whiter (unless you have one of the conditions mentioned in the question: Can all teeth be whitened?). How much whiter actually depends on a multitude of factors, including how stained your teeth were, what caused the discoloration, how well your dentin reacts to gel, the kind and strength of gel used and the number applications and length of each one. You should know that our teeth can be whitened no more than their natural color, which is different for everyone. Most people get dramatic results while a few get less impressive results, but 99% of people are very satisfied with the results they obtain with our system. 7-12 shades improvement is the norm with our gel. However, the whiter your teeth are to start with, the less noticeable the improvement will be. On the contrary, the more yellow your teeth are, the easier they are to whiten and the greater the improvement you will achieve.

Q. Who should NOT undergo teeth whitening?
A.
Any of the following: pregnant or lactating women, people with poor enamel or decalcification caused by excessive use of fluorides, people with periodontal disease including gingivitis or gums in poor condition, people who wear braces or who had their braces removed less than 6 months ago, people who recently had oral surgery, people with decaying teeth or exposed roots, people with open cavities, people with a history of allergic reactions to peroxide products, people with silver fillings in, near or behind the front teeth, people under the age of 13. Such conditions are rare so it can be assumed that over 90% of people can undergo and benefit from teeth whitening

Q. Can all teeth be whitened?
A.
Our gels are proven effective for removing the most common stains caused by lifestyle habits (red wine, coffee and tea, tobacco, etc). However, other types of stains such as those caused by tetracycline, certain antibiotics, excessive fluoride and age may also cause tooth discolouration and may be more difficult to whiten. Artificial dental work such as crowns, bonding, caps, veneers, bridges or composite fillings will whiten but not any whiter than when they were first put in. Artificial teeth will not be damaged or affected by the peroxide. Customers with artificial teeth wishing to whiten their natural teeth can use our products. In general, results will vary from customer to customer depending on their enamel.

Q. Does teeth whitening cause sensitivity?
A.
Our products result in minimal to no sensitivity. Mild tissue (gum) irritation (a tingling or stinging sensation) may occur during the whitening process, but this usually only occurs during the procedure and subsides completely shortly after finishing the treatment. If sensitivity persists, reduce usage time and/or frequency until the sensitivity subsides. You can also use a toothpaste designed for sensitivity after your treatment.

Q. How long does teeth whitening results last?
A.
Typically results last anywhere from 6 months to a year. The wide time span varies depending on a person's habits. For example, someone who drinks a lot of coffee or wine, is a smoker, or eats a lot of staining foods, results won't last as long as someone who doesn't. Another factor depends on how porous the person's teeth are. Although you cannot know how porous your teeth are, the more porous the quicker teeth can get stained. Customers may wish to repeat the 6 day treatment after 3 to 6 months or before special events to enhance their white smile. It's all a matter of personal preference, genetics, and how stained their teeth were to begin with.

Q. How many teeth whitening applications are there in each product?
A.

  • Whitening Pen: up to 3-7 applications
  • 3ml Whitening Syringe: up to 3-5 applications
  • 10ml Whitening Syringe: up to 10-15 applications
  • Remember: less is more when applying gel

Q. I already have mouth trays, can I use them, or do I have to use the ones in your kit?
A. If your mouth trays are in good condition and were custom fitted to your teeth, you can use the gel in our kits with your trays. However, you'll still receive our trays with your kit.

Q. Why did I get white spots on my gums?
A.
Blanching (whitening of the gums) occurs occasionally. The gums return to their normal colour usually within less than 24 hours.

Q. Why did I get white spots on some of my teeth?
A.
Possible white spots or demineralization may appear on people who have had braces or who have porous enamel. Teeth typically return to their normal colour within less than 24 hours.

A.:

  • The top part of the tray is slightly deeper to accommodate the fact our top teeth are longer
  • The guard should only fit comfortably one way
  • There is a small tab in the inside of the tray as you insert it into your mouth that helps push down/back you tongue
  • This ‘tab’ should be facing the bottom of your mouth
